Other Thoughts:

What other topics about the book would you like to discuss, or what other comments would you like to make?

If Death says "I saw the book thief three times" (5) then how can he recall several anecdotes. Surely, since World War II is going on he wouldn't have the time to watch one girl.

I do not understand why some of the dialogue in the book is in German and some is in English. Did they speak both even though they barely went to school, or is it just a unique touch that the author added?

Xavier brings up an excellent point. Death does say the sentence in Xavier's post, but maybe death is some sort of almost an omniscient being, meaning he can watch everyone at the same time. However, this hypothesis contradicts the quote about only seeing her three times, so I am not sure if we will ever know.

The setting is in Germany, so they must speak German, but since we dont speak German, it must have been, as Kate said, added as a unique touch. It also allows us to imagine what the author intended us to, and give us a different view on their everyday life. I certainly learned some German just from reading the book.

I wonder why the author put sentences in bold that are either facts, questions, or lists that the narrator, Death, tells us. Was it simply to put a different twist on the way the story was written, or just a different way to clue us in on some things we might not have caught while reading?

In response to Xavier's first comment: I agree with him because death always complains about humans but he's watching one girl? I think her story is nothing special in WW II. There must have been worse stories in that time period.

I was wondering why Rosa actually let a jew in the basement. She seems really harsh and rude. She certainly doesn't seem like the type who would do that kind of thing.
