Figurative Language:

What examples did you find of figurative language and sound effects? Quote the example, give the page #, and label the type.

"She'd be eating her nails, waiting for the train."
-- page 26 This passage contains a hyperbole, "eating her nails" meaning that she is very anxious.

"The applied smell leaned toward the crowd..."--page 109 This is an example of Personification.

"To their left, flames and burning books were cheered like heroes."--page 113 This quote contains a simile.

"The word were on their way, and when they arrived, Liesel would hold them in her hands like the clouds, and she would ring them out like the rain."--page 80 This has two similes in it.

"Shaped like a long, broken arm, the road contained several houses with lacerated windows and bruised walls."--pg. 51. This is an example of both a simile in comparing the street to an arm, and personification saying that the houses were bruised.

"One sat painfully now, among the falling chunks of rain, and the other stood next to her waiting.'--pg.80. This quote is a hyperbole.
